In the July 30, 1999 Laurel Leader-Call, the writer penned a missive titled “Backs Barnett in coroner’s race.” Nancy Barnett, then a Democrat, in the Aug. 4, 1999 primary election, vied against James Gieger, Joy Jordan and Eva Ruffin — all Democrats!

At that time, based on Barnett’s “29 years of nursing, of which 16 years were in Intensive Care Units,” the writer, along with the late Mr. Sam Simmons, strongly backed Barnett because, at that time, she appeared best suited with fire and strength enough to endure the rigors of the job in 1999.
